Police ID woman shot by officer she ran over outside club

ORLANDO, Fla. — An Orlando police officer shot an19-year-old woman who ran him over with her vehicle shortly after she was kicked out of a nightclub following an altercation early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The officer, Sergio Ramos, and the woman, Emily Cox, were taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center after the incident outside Roxy's Night Club on North Bennett Road and East Colonial Drive.

Ramos was treated and released. Cox remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. She will be charged with aggravated battery with a motor vehicle, authorities said.

Detectives said just after 2 a.m., three women were escorted out of club and were told to leave after they were involved in a fight during the club’s “Takeover Female Free 4 All” event.

As two of the women were walking toward their vehicle, Cox tried to run them over with her SUV, police said.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Cox drove out of the parking lot and down Bennett Road going the wrong direction and then turned around.

Ramos, who was working a security detail in the parking lot, tried to stop the vehicle but Cox drove toward the officer and didn't stop, striking him, police said.

"The vehicle wouldn’t stop, and it was coming right at him," said Orlando Police Sgt. Vincent Ogburn.

Police said Ramos fired several shots at the SUV, striking Cox once below the left shoulder.

At least four bullets hit the windshield, police said. Witnesses who heard the shots said more rounds were fired.

"All she had to do was stop, and the issue could have been resolved right there," said Ogburn.

Cox drove to the Diamond Exchange, about a half a mile away near the Fashion Square Mall, where she stopped her vehicle.

"Don't know if alcohol was involved. (I) do know it's a club, but I cannot say if drinking was involved or not," said Ogburn.

Members of the Orlando Police Department Internal Affairs Section, Homicide Unit and Florida Department of Law Enforcement are conducting an investigation.
