COLLEGE PARK, Fla. — Orlando police are banking on dog owners to be the eyes and ears of their neighborhoods, which has received mixed reactions from residents who talked with Channel 9 on Thursday.
Nancy Smathers walks up and down the streets in College Park with her two dogs, Hank and Tequila. She knows everything about the area and recognizes the faces of those who live there. She's also able to spot those who aren't from the community.
Smathers said she's definitely willing to call police to report suspicious activity if she were to spot it.
Raw: Dog walker likes neighborhood watch idea
Officers want to add dog walkers to the community watch, a new program to the College Park area.
"It's a great idea. I love that idea," said Smathers.
College Park has been plagued by break-ins over the years and personnel are looking for ways to deter crime.
But not all residents are happy to be a crime fighter. Brittany McPeak runs her beagle on her bike as much as she can, but she wants to just enjoy the ride.
"I don't think that's my job but that sounds fun for someone else if they were interested in that kind of thing. I just prefer to walk the dog," she said.
Orlando police know it's a tall order, but they're hoping the crime-fighting effort will catch on.
The first class for those interested will be held at the College Park Community Center on June 16 at 7 p.m.
