Port Orange public works property thefts has director, son in hot water

PORT ORANGE, Fla.,None — A 16-year-old's alleged thefts from Port Orange Public Works have his father, director Warren Pike, in hot water.

Police just wrapped up an in-depth investigation into Pike. Now, he could lose his job after police found more than 100 pieces of stolen city property at his home.

WFTV's Blaine Tolison obtained a memo claiming the teen stole things like police lights, tires and power tools from taxpayers. And now the city wants to hear how much Pike knew about it.

Police questioned him about that, and why his son even had a gate code to get into a facility.

"There's a hearing on Monday in the city manager's office, actually in the conference room that he can present his side of the story. He can do it verbally or in written form," said Kent Donahue with the City of Port Orange.

According to Port Orange police, Pike's son, Dylan Pike, and a friend admitted they stole most of the items from a building at the city's public works facility.

A memo from the police department states that detectives found out about it through a tip because one of the boys bragged at school about having police lights. Some of those lights were found at Pike's home on Broken Bow Lane, where WFTV tried to track him down.

In Pike's garage, police also found street signs, fire equipment, more police lights, police tires and rims, and even a generator and an arc welder.

Police say items are worth about $17,000. In the memo, police even questioned Pike if he had knowledge about his son installing strobe lights from the city on people's cars.

Pike, who makes $105,000 a year, told police he didn't know about that and claims he knew about old tires and street signs that he let his son have. However, police believe Pike's son has been stealing on a regular basis and the city property in Pike's garage looked like it had been there for two years.

In a report, Pike told police he let employees take old property from public works instead of auctioning it off.

Dylan Pike has been arrested. His father, Warren Pike, isn't facing criminal charges at this point, but he is still on paid administrative leave.
