PORT ORANGE, Fla. — A Port Orange man said he had a terrifying encounter with a masked man on Halloween night, and now he’s worried the suspicious man will come back to his neighborhood.
Cody Sheldon said he saw the masked man peering into people’s windows and called 911.
Sheldon said was sitting in his car in a Port Orange parking lot near City Center when he spotted something odd.
“He was walking up to the library parking lot,” said Sheldon.
Sheldon said he saw a man wearing a mask like the one from the horror movie “The Purge” and said the man was swinging a bat against rocks near parked cars.
Sheldon followed the masked man through the parking lot and toward the library, where he said the man stared right into a surveillance camera.
Sheldon continued to follow the man down a trail that leads into a neighborhood near Wexford and Chelsea ways.
“This white house right here is the first house that he went to,” Sheldon said.
He called 911 and spoke to a dispatcher as he watched the masked man peer into people’s windows.
When police arrived minutes after the 911 call, the man was gone.
“He just vanished. He just disappeared,” Sheldon said.
The incident isn’t the first time people in “The Purge” masks have caused a scare.
Twenty people wearing the masks attacked two men in Orange County on Monday night, investigators said.
Sheldon, meanwhile, just hopes police find the man.
“If I see (him), I’m calling the police,” he said.
Port Orange police said the case was closed because the man was never found.
