Planned closure for US 17-92 delayed

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A construction project that would have closed a portion of U.S. 17-92 from Thursday evening until Monday has been postponed, state transportation officials said Wednesday.

State officials said they made the decision to delay the project due to a forecast of rain, but have not announced a rescheduled date.

Thousands of Winter Park drivers will have to find an alternate route when road crews shut down southbound lanes from Lake Avenue to Lee Road.

Some drivers use 17-92 to get where they need to go quickly, but they may need to use Interstate 4 instead.

“I love I-4. It’s a challenge,” driver Chris Langdon said.

Detours could add 10 to 20 minutes to commuters' drives, depending on traffic.

"I'll have to figure a way to go around it. I'm not sure why they couldn't do it at night, but maybe they have a good reason," Langdon said.

Florida Department of Transportation officials said they need to rip up the old concrete slabs and replace them with asphalt.

One detour that drivers may need to use will take them from 17-92 to Maitland Boulevard to I-4 to Lee Road and back to 17-92.

Another route sends drivers through Eatonville on Lake Avenue to get to Wymore, then to Lee Road and back to 17-92.
