Review board to send Orlando police chief letter urging review of officer accused of excessive force

ORLANDO, Fla. — A citizen review board is hoping the country’s attention on law enforcement could change the Orlando police chief’s mind regarding an officer accused of excessive force.

The board plans to send a letter to Orlando Rolon about officer Jonathan Mills after a March incident with a suspected drug dealer prompted the State Attorney to drop charges against the suspect.

Citizen review boards typically don’t have power to take any action themselves, but they can make recommendations to the head of a policing agency like the Orlando Police Department.

Mills was OPD’s officer of the year in 2018, but had previously been accused of making questionable comments and using excessive force.

Channel 8 asked Chief Rolon about Mills in February.

“His conduct has not risen to the level where he should be terminated but obviously that’s going to be something he’s gonna have to think of whenever he interacts with the public,” said Rolon.

The review board met virtually Tuesday, but they plan to present their letter about officer Mills to the chief Wednesday.
