VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A shooting suspect involved in a road rage incident was arrested Thursday in Volusia County, according to authorities.
Deputies said Chance Everett, 22, fired shots at a car full of people around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
According to deputies, a car carrying three people was on Spring Garden Avenue north of DeLand when they got behind a Ford Focus.
Investigators said the occupants of the first car got into an altercation with the driver of the Focus.
They said that at one point, the vehicles were side by side, and the driver of the Focus allegedly pointed a gun at them.
Deputies said the first car sped up and the occupants reported hearing a single gunshot.
A few minutes later, a second road rage incident, involving the same Ford Focus was reported, according to investigators.
Investigators said that in the second incident, two occupants of a car reported that the driver of the Ford Focus got out of his car and walked toward them. When one of the occupants got out of the second car the man pointed at gun at him, then returned to his vehicle and drove away.
No shots were fired in the second incident, investigators said.
According to investigators, those involved in the second incident were able to provide a license plate number for the alleged gunman.
Police arrested Everett at his Wiley Avenue home in DeLand a short time after the second incident.
Investigators said he had a loaded handgun in his pocket when he was taken into custody, but the gun that they believe was fired in the first road rage incident was stashed in the house.
According to investigators, Everett said the second incident was a case of mistaken identity. He said he believed that the car was the same one from the first incident and that they were following him.
Everett was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach on four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of discharging a firearm from a vehicle.
He is being held on a $250,000 bond.
