Driver ticketed after semi jackknifes on Fairbanks curve; other crashes caught on camera

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Slick roads caused trouble on the infamous Fairbanks curve on Interstate 4 over the weekend.

Shortly after midnight, a tractor-trailer jackknifed on the curve, blocking traffic for hours while crews removed the wreckage..

Troopers said after entering the curve, Alfonso Sixto, 47, lost control and the truck began to jackknife as it skidded across the interstate.

The truck collided with a concrete barrier and continued along the wall for about 73 feet before hitting a street light pole, knocking it down, authorities said.

The truck came to a rest facing south on I-4, partially on the inside paved shoulder and in the inside center lanes.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Sixto was ticketed for speeding too fast for conditions.

The Florida Department of Transportation recently spent more than $200,000 to cut grooves into the highway to drain off the rain water.

Two other back-to-back crashes on the Fairbanks curve were captured on FDOT cameras.

A car ran right into a concrete wall on Sunday morning.

Then, near Lee Road, cars had to veer around a disabled car in the middle of the road.  However, one driver didn't stop in time, and he slammed into the back of the other vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

There have been more than 50 wrecks on that stretch of I-4 in the past five years, authorities said.
