Seminole County road project shakes, breaks woman's home

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — A construction project meant to fix a road in Seminole County actually caused one woman's home to shake uncomfortably every time a large vehicle drove by.

So after more than a year of repeated calls to the county without any answers, Sanford resident Sherry Davis called Eyewitness News for help.

Channel 9's Bianca Castro was there when, less than 24 hours later, Davis finally got a response.

Davis lives about 200 feet from Airport Boulevard but every time a large vehicle passes over an asphalt patch, her home shakes, so she called Eyewitness News.

"I just can't see a bump in the road causing vibrations all the way this far," said Davis.

It does, and Davis said she is tired of it.

Davis said the vibrations have caused her front steps to detach and items to fall off her wall.

She's called the county's road department nearly half a dozen times.

"I called them and I said, 'Look, I've had it. If y'all don't come out here this time and do something about this patch, I'm contacting Channel 9,'" Davis said.

Less than 24 hours after Channel 9 called the county, a project manager was in Davis' living room to feel the house shake for herself.

Jim Beach of Seminole County's Roads and Stormwater Division said they didn't know the Davis' were still dealing with the issue until Eyewitness News called.

"It's actually a very good patch, there's just one little area where there is a bump, that's what we're going to be fixing," said Beach.

The Davis' have been dealing with small tremors for more than a year and county officials still can't say exactly what's causing them.

There's no drainage pipe that runs underneath the home.

Sherry fears the vibrations are a sign of a bigger problem like a sinkhole, but right now she is looking forward to being able to sit still.

"I really don't believe they would have come out if it hadn't been for [Channel 9]," Davis said.

The county plans to come out and redo the asphalt patch Tuesday.

Officials told the Davis' they'll have to contact their insurance company to see about repairs to their home.
