SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — A Seminole County school bus driver was fired for alleged behavior that may have put students at risk. Garron Davis was fired after failing a drug test, WFTV found out Wednesday.
Months before, two other drivers lost their jobs: one for allegedly texting while driving, and the other for allegedly leaving a running bus full of students unattended.
Davis claims the whole thing was just a big misunderstanding.
Davis drove students from Sanford Elementary and three other schools.
He was suspended immediately and fired on Tuesday after a random drug test showed marijuana in his system in October.
It's hard enough for parents to trust a total stranger when sending their child on a school bus.
"This is part of the reason I don't have my child on a school bus on a daily basis," said parent Jessica Sauls.
But Seminole County school leaders said Davis, 27, tested positive for drug use while in charge of dozens of students.
"Were you high when you were driving kids?" asked reporter Karla Ray.
"No, of course not," Davis replied.
"You didn't put any kids in danger?" Ray asked.
"Of course not," he said.
Davis could not explain to WFTV how he tested positive for marijuana.
"I might've, you know what I'm saying, slipped up and done something to put myself in a bad situation, maybe. I don't think so," said Davis.
WFTV found out school bus drivers are tested randomly every day in Seminole County, and that day just happened to be his.
"I don't know how it got in my system. Like I said, I partook in a lot of parties, so I wasn't really aware," Davis said.
Parents WFTV spoke with worry some drivers aren't tested often enough.
"I don't think there's enough testing and backgrounds for bus drivers, so that does scare me," Sauls said. Davis insists he didn't put children in danger.
WFTV found that Davis has no criminal background in Seminole County.
He said he's working with the union to see if he has any option of working with the district again.
