Thousands of people were without power Wednesday morning in Pensacola after a severe storm system which spawned a tornado hit the area.
PENSACOLA, Fla. — Homes were flattened and numerous other buildings sustained heavy damage in the storm, officials said.
A shelter was opened inside a Pensacola church for displaced residents.
Drivers were urged to stay off Interstate 10 where the Florida Highway Patrol shut down approximately 25 miles of the roadway.
At one point, strong winds blew over a semitrailer on the I-10 bridge, which caused backups in the area for more than two hours.
No information on the number of people injured or the full extent of the damage was immediately available.
