ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County middle school student is upset that administrators told her to take off a bandana of the Haitian flag.
Mitchpaelle Quetant is a student at Meadowbrook Middle School and wanted to celebrate Haitian flag day on May 18 by wearing the flag.
"It was supposed to be a day of celebration and pride," Quetant said. "To show people that we weren't afraid that we were Haitian."
But Quetant said it was cut short when she was told to remove the flag bandana from her wrist.
"You don't let us come to school and display our pride for our country," Quetant said.
The honor roll student refused to take off the flag and was sent to in-school suspension. School officials said the flag wasn't the problem, but that bandanas are not allowed to be worn on campus.
"They said it was against code of conduct," Quetant said.
The school's principal told Eyewitness News that several students wore shirts showing the Haitian flag and were not asked to change.
But Quetant believes she should have been allowed to wear the bandana.
"We should have the right to wear it," Quetant said.
