15-year-old boy shot during Orange City home invasion

ORANGE CITY, Fla. — A boy was shot in the leg early Thursday morning during a thwarted home invasion on 19th Street near Orange City, Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

A 911 call was received about an altercation that turned into a shooting.  Deputies said when they arrived there were several people in the street in front of the house where the incident happened.

Wade Joseph, 15, was lying on his back, bleeding from a gunshot wound just below the right knee, deputies said. His father, 51-year-old Constantine Joseph, told deputies that he had just returned home when two men wearing dark clothing and ski masks attacked him as he was walking to the front door. Constantine Joseph said they tried to force their way into the house, but he fought back and was beaten with fists and pistol-whipped.

Wade Joseph told officers that he heard the commotion, and when he ran outside to his father's aid, he was shot in the leg. The men then ran off.

A friend of the victim, Alex Munson, said, "I just saw Wade lying on the street with his mom right next to him, and there was just a bunch of cops and paramedics around him, and they were telling me to sit over here and they were telling him to wiggle his feet and stuff, and I didn't really know how to feel at the moment."

Wade Joseph was taken was taken by ambulance to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for treatment of the gunshot wound. His father was treated at the scene, but declined to be transported to the hospital.

While the investigation into the shooting is ongoing, deputies said it does not appear to have been a random act.
