Teens pushing disabled car hit, killed by SUV in Apopka

APOPKA, Fla. — Two teenagers were hit and killed by an SUV while they were pushing a broken down car in Apopka Friday night, according to police.

Officers said the teens were struck on Rock Springs Road near Ashley Boulevard Friday night.

"Three of them were in the back pushing it and another vehicle came along behind them and struck the rear of the car," Sgt. Ed Chittenden, with Apopka police, said.

Three teens were pushing a disabled red Honda Civic while a fourth was sitting in the driver's seat when a red Chevrolet SUV crashed into the car from behind, authorities said. Two of the teens were pronounced deceased at the scene, while the other two were injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

The two who were killed have been identified as 18-year-old Axel Padro and 18-year-old Cameron Gonzalez. The teens are students at Apopka High School, according to their Facebook profiles.

"It really was tragic, It is a sad situation for everybody," Chittenden said.

The driver of the SUV told officers the roadway was not well lit and he didn't see the teens pushing the car

The victims "indicated that their hazard lights were on and we are a little bit in the rural part of the city," Chittenden said.

It's unclear if the unidentified driver of the SUV will be charged. The crash remains under investigation.
