ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Early testimony brought tears and emotion in the trial of the man accused of causing a deadly crash at an Orange County day care center in April.
Four-year-old Lily Quintus died when a car crashed through the wall of a KinderCare on Goldenrod Road in Winter Park.
Investigators said Robert Corchado, 28, fled the scene after hitting another car, causing it to crash into the day care, killing Lily, and sending several children and adults to hospitals.
On Thursday, prosecutors tried to convince jurors that Corchado caused the crash and fled the scene.
"She had debris all over her and was bleeding," a witness said of Lily.
During Friday's testimony, prosecutors seemed to be focused on placing Corchado in the SUV as the driver.
A lab analyst testified swabs from inside the SUV, including the steering wheel, matched Corchado's DNA, officials said.
The prosecution also focused on evidence related to the drug charges against Corchado.
A sheriff's office crime scene investigator showed the court a backpack taken from the SUV. Additional evidence included photos of baggies packaged for sale.
A Florida Highway Patrol investigator also testified about damage to the front bumper of the SUV that prosecutors claimed Corchado was driving at the time of the crash.
The investigator also described damage to the rear of the car that prosecutors said Corchado struck.
Investigators found the SUV a short time after the crash.
Photos of the backpack, wads of cash and several baggies that investigators said contained heroin, cocaine and marijuana were part of the evidence presented.
The defense is expected to begin presenting its case Monday. Defense attorneys said they are still undecided on whether Corchado will testify.
