Three Seminole County schools in danger of closing due to budget crisis

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla.,None — Three Seminole County schools are in danger of closing because of the district's budget crisis.

The school board laid out its budget reduction plan during a meeting Tuesday night.

Two schools, which haven't yet been chosen, and the Hopper Center for students with behavioral issues are on the chopping block.

Forty-nine teaching positions would also be eliminated. Coupled with additional cuts, it would save the district nearly $7 million.

“We continuously hear about the triple A array of programs: academics, arts and athletics. How we remain focused on preparing students for college and careers in the new innovative economy, but how can we continue to provide that to Seminole County students if we are cutting fundamental programs in the schools?" asked Sarah Wilson, a teacher at Sterling Park Elementary.

Twelve elementary schools with low enrollment could be prime candidates for closing.

Seminole County schools are facing a $21 million budget shortfall.

A final decision on the closures isn't expected until early next year.
