TITUSVILLE, Fla. — Hundreds of Titusville residents said their water bills are suddenly tripling and they’re demanding answers from the city.
A resident is using social media to push for answers. Lisa Loseke said there’s no way her family is using as much water as the meter reads, and she’s one of hundreds with the same complaint.
“Our water bill will kind of be low for a couple months and then we’ll get these obnoxious high water bills,” she said.
Loseke keeps a close eye on her water bills from the city and said something seemed wrong when her bills stated she and her family used 10,000-11,000 gallons of water some months, instead of their typical 3,000-4,000.
“I reached out on social media and said, ‘You know, is anyone having this problem?,’” she said.
Loseke said 200 people responded.
Many of them said their bills don’t seem right either, so she asked city officials if something could be wrong with the meter readings.
“They say, ‘You have a leak.’ That’s pretty much their go to response. Either you have a leak or neighbors stealing your water,” she said.
Loseke said her fiancé found no leads in her home and other Facebook posters said they had no leaks either.
Her bills have been costing more than $150.
“I can’t tell you the whys right now. I can tell you this is not a new issue,” said Titusville Mayor Jim Tulley.
The mayor said if they can figure out customers have been overcharged, they’ll get a refund.
“We’ll have to use city resources to go out and find where the problems are, why they’re happening and they may be different from one citizen to another,” Tulley said.
