Trees falls, crushes Winter Park home

WINTER PARK, Fla. — A Winter Park family doesn't have a home Friday after a tree fell on the family's roof and crushed it.

A grandmother and her grandson were inside the home when it happened and are lucky to have escaped without injury.

Code enforcement said the home, on Douglas Avenue, isn't safe.

The tree that collapsed is in the back of the house. It split in half and fell onto the roof, collapsing into two of the bedrooms.

Brandon Lamar showed Channel 9 the damage and said he was in one of the bedrooms when the tree fell into it.

"I was laying in bed on the phone," he said. "I heard a loud cracking sound. Any other time, I think it was like sticks falling on top of the house. Just kept getting louder, louder."

"I'm really going to miss it, because I need my space," Lamar's grandmother said.

The family bought the house more than 20 years ago.

"I was raised in this house since I was a little boy. It's personal to me," said Lamar.

Winter Park officials shut off the water and electricity to the home.

The family has insurance and is waiting to hear back.

Officials said there was no evidence the tree was struck by lightning. They said it likely fell due to heavy rain and wind.
