UCF students support plan to move all Greek housing on campus

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Plans are in full swing to move all Greek housing onto the campus of the University of Central Florida.

Some fraternities and sororities are located off campus in an area known by students as “the Greek ghetto.”

The new complex would be built on land on Alafaya Trail and Gemini Boulevard.

Many students like the plan for safety reasons.

Within the last month, there’s been a shooting and an attempted rape close to the campus near the off-campus sorority and fraternity houses.

“I think that would be good for safety reasons. I think it’d be nice to have all of Greek life on campus,” said UCF student Sabrina Kahlbaugh.

Campus police officers can’t patrol the neighborhood because it’s out of their jurisdiction, but they could watch over the members if the development existed on Gemini Boulevard.

University records show 17 fraternities and sororities want in if the new development is built.

It would be right next to an area called Greek Park, the current location of the on-campus Greek buildings.

“I feel safe here on campus and I feel that a lot of people off campus would feel safer if they moved here on campus,” said student Cesar Rodriguez.

It’s still unclear when the plans would come to fruition.
