ORLANDO, Fla. — The University of Central Florida Police Department responded in force Tuesday to a threat made against the campus during a phone call, officials said.
According to a post on the department's Twitter account, the man called officers just after 5 p.m. and said he was armed and on UCF's campus.
The man also made threatening remarks, the post said.
In a statement, the UCF Police Department said officers canvased the campus while investigators tried to keep the caller on the phone.
The man "clearly sounded as if he was under the influence of drugs," the statement said.
The call was later determined to be a hoax, police said.
Still, officers urged people in the area to remain alert and call 911 if they see any suspicious activity.
The CFE Arena remained open as planned for the UCF vs. Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball game, police said.
Officials said they decided to keep the increased police presence in place Tuesday night due to the basketball game and the annual Light Up UCF event.
Parent Ifii Amyiwo was pulling into a parking garage on the UCF campus when she noticed something was amiss.
"As we pulled into the parking garage, I noticed the cars, cop cars, out there," Amyiwo said.
