SANFORD, Fla. — Eight people were shot during a family gathering in Sanford Saturday night, and three victims remained hospitalized Monday, according to the Sanford Police Department.
Police said Monday that five of the eight victims have been treated and released from the hospital. Two victims remain in critical condition.
The shooting happened at about 9:54 p.m. Saturday near 10th Street and Poplar Avenue.

Officers responding to a 911 call found multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds.
According to the initial police investigation, a family gathering was taking place on Poplar Avenue when suspects began shooting into the crowd.
Police said the circumstances suggested the shooting was an isolated incident.
Police later confirmed early Sunday that all eight victims were adults. No suspects had been identified at that time.
As of Monday morning, police said the motive remains unknown and investigators are continuing efforts to identify the suspect or suspects involved.

“Our investigators are still working diligently to understand what caused someone to commit such a violent act,” Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith said in the department’s initial statement.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.

The Sanford Police Department also said it is continuing to work with the community on gun-violence prevention, including resources and educational programs focused on violence prevention and safety.
