ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.,None — WFTV has new video that's shedding more light on a high-speed chase and dangerous crash in Orange County.
Investigators said not only did the 28-year-old driver, James Maddux of Orlando, run from state troopers, but he may have been trying to hide another potential crime involving his teenage passenger.
Troopers said they clocked Maddux in a black Honda going 73 miles per hour in a construction zone with a posted speed limit of 55 mph.
He reached speeds of more than 100 mph as he tried to outrun troopers on the 408. But the chase ended just three minutes later.
You can't see it this video, but the driver lost control and flew into a retention pond at the Alafaya Trail exit.
WFTV's cameras caught the aftermath. Maddux was thrown from the car. His 17-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries, and now there are questions about whether the two were having an inappropriate relationship.
"His family has shown a concern as to why he was with this adult, and they'll be working into the relationship of those two," Florida Highway Patrol's Kim Montes said.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office is looking into the sexual allegations.
Maddux was on probation for running from Seminole County deputies just last year. Troopers say the car belonged to his ex-boyfriend.
Jennifer Hurless heard the crash and said she wasn't surprised to learn Maddux has been on the run before.
"If they're going to do it once, they're going to do it again. They're not going to stop," Hurless said.
For now, Maddux is locked up at the Orange County Jail. He is charged with DUI, fleeing and eluding, and driving without a valid license.
But that list could get longer if investigators determine he had a sexual relationship with his younger passenger.
