Video shows car plowing through Publix, seriously injuring customers

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — Newly released surveillance video and 911 calls show the moments when a car plowed through the front of a Flagler County Publix grocery store, seriously injuring customers inside.

Customers, including a woman with a baby in a stroller, had no time to react before they were hit by the Toyota Camry at the store on Belle Terre Parkway on Satursday.

The 10 victims of the crash survived and most walked away with only minor injuries.

In the video, several people are sitting on the benches along the entrance to the store, including the woman with a baby in the stroller, when the Camry plows through the front doors and hits all of them.

The car continued past the checkout counters and finally came to a stop near a potato chip display.

Miraculously, the baby only had minor injuries.

In the video, the cashiers and customers are seen running frantically and people were grabbing their faces in horror.

The 911 calls show how chaotic it was.

"Is the person still in the vehicle?" asked the operator.

"I don't know. The manager is over there. There's people screaming everywhere," said the 911 caller.

Some people rushed to the car to help because an 83-year-old man was pinned underneath.

In the video, store employees and customers can be seen lifting the Camry off of Lugo Hernandez.

He and his wife were seriously injured, but the other eight people had minor injuries. Since the accident, most have been released from the hospital.

On Tuesday, troopers cited 76-year-old Thelma Wagenhoffer with careless driving, for causing the dramatic crash.

Wagenhoffer said she accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake, according to officials.
