Volusia County to allow cars back on beaches in time for Mother’s Day weekend

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County beaches have been free from cars for weeks, but starting Saturday cars will return to the sand just in time for Mother’s Day.

The county is opening 14 of its ramps to allow cars to park on the beach, and setting up poles to mark each parking spot 25-feet apart.

“Typically, Mother’s Day weekend is one of the busiest weekends on the beach for the year,” said Tammy Malphurs, with Volusia County Beach Safety.

Beach safety is using overtime to bring in additional personnel to help cover the 47 miles of beach and educate people on the social distancing standards in place.

Officials said their main objective is to educate people on the new rules.

The county is limiting parking in its lots to limit the crowds. But to accommodate the people heading to the beach, it is reopening its public restrooms.
