VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Hundreds of dead fish have been washing up along the beach shores in Volusia County over the last few days.
State and county officials are working to find out what’s causing the fish kill.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said it has had three reported fish kill in the county this month.
The sight and smell of dead fish has been an unwelcome surprise for travelers.
“It was just lying there. It had the little horns on it, they are kind of exotic and you just don’t normally see those on the beach,” said tourist Cindi Bigley.
According to FWC, more than 200 fish have washed up along Volusia County beaches. The species that seems to be the most affected are cowfish, striped burrfish, triggerfish and porcupine puffer fish.
While they are not sure what the cause is, county workers are taking samples of the water to determine what is killing the fish.
The results of the tests done on the water samples should be back within the next couple days.
Residents are encouraged to report fish kills to FWC's hotline.
