Officials with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office responded to an incident in a DeBary neighborhood that involved a dog being shot, according to deputies.

It happened just after 7:30 p.m. Thursday when officials were dispatched out to Paddock Drive in reference of a shooting.

Upon arrival, a deputy learned that a pit bull had approached a man as he was walking his dogs in front of a residence\, according to an incident report.

The man said that he tried to defend his dogs from the pit bull with an umbrella.

According to a report, deputies said the man shot the dog after the pit bull gnarled at him.

The owner of the pit bull told deputies that his pit bull attacked one of the other dogs because it ran toward his property. He also claimed the man shot his dog on purpose even though the man’s own dog wasn’t on a leash.

The owner later requested that the deputy put down the pit bull due to its injuries.

No criminal charges will be filed against the man who shot the pit bull, according to the incident report.
