Skydiver, 76, dies after midair collision with parachutist in DeLand, police say

DELAND, Fla. — A 76-year-old man was killed in an apparent skydiving accident in DeLand on Sunday morning, according to police.

Just before 10 a.m., police said a man, identified as Carl Daugherty, 76, landed hard in a parking lot and was found unresponsive.

Witnesses told officers that they watched two parachutists collide midair with their parachutes open.

One person was able to regain control while the other was not able to get his parachute open, police said.

Officers said bystanders attempted to render first aid to the sky diver but were unsuccessful.
