The state says that includes any material that teaches racism as a systemic issue upholding white supremacy rather than a product of prejudice.

Juniors at Deltona and Pine Ridge high schools saw the video. While some people felt the content is divisive, others said it does nothing more than teach people the importance of treating others with respect.

An 11-second statement in the video is what some parents said violates the state’s ban on teaching critical race theory.

“I think we are all in agreement we are against racism but they are trying to put people into groups and further divide people,” said Rebecca Sarwi with Moms for Liberty.

The state defines critical race theory as “the theory that racism is not merely the product of prejudice but that racism is embedded in American society and its legal systems in order to uphold the supremacy of white persons.”

The ban went into effect in June.

Elizabeth Albert with the teachers union told Channel 9 that critical race theory is not taught in Volusia County classrooms. She said she sees the video as enforcing basic principles of kindness.

“This video is not teaching anything other than to be kind to each other and treat others the way you want to be treated,” Albert said.
