ORLANDO, Fla. — Some Orlando businesses are not enforcing a mask mandate issued back in June for Orange County, and one city commissioner caught several customers not wearing masks at a Wawa in Metrowest.

She recorded it for nearly 20 minutes on her phone.

City Commissioner Regina Hill was inside the Wawa along Raleigh Street on Sunday morning when she noticed customers were not following the mask mandate, despite signs being posted.

Hill asked for the manager, who then called security.

“I don’t care what they do at no other Wawa, but District 5, city of Orlando, they are going to adhere to the policy put in place so people can live around here,” Hill is heard saying in the video.

In a prepared statement, a Wawa spokesperson said, in part, that, “It is our strict policy to follow all state and local directives requiring face coverings for associates and customers.”

The spokesperson also said the stores offer free masks to customers without face coverings.

Anthony’s Pizza in Thornton Park has made it clear with their policy: No mask, no service.

Civil rights attorney Greg Francis told Eyewitness News, “This is not about civil rights. It’s about human rights. We are in a worldwide pandemic where the rules have to be different.”

Hill said, “It’s our responsibility, when we see something, say something and do something. And it’s very irresponsible for anyone that has been mandated to protect their customers not to adhere to their policies.”

You can be charged with trespassing if a business owner asks you to leave for not wearing a mask.

Orlando Police Department officials told Eyewitness News that officers will continue to monitor and respond to all calls for service related to social distancing recommendations and face mandates.
