Windermere doctor convicted of Medicare fraud

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Federal authorities say a central Florida doctor has been convicted of defrauding Medicare by intentionally misdiagnosing patients.

U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III says a federal jury on Tuesday found 57-year-old Dr. David Pon guilty of 20 counts of health care fraud. Federal prosecutors say Pon intentionally misdiagnosed patients with a degenerative eye disease, and then used the false diagnoses to charge Medicare for unnecessary laser treatments and testing.

Pon was also found to have injected the victims -- many seniors -- with dangerous dyes that posed serious health effects.

He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for each count. His sentencing is scheduled for March 14, 2016.

Pon had offices in Leesburg and Windermere.
