ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Penny Hitchcock was in court Thursday set for sentencing following a DUI crash that left her daughter, Jennifer Hitchcock Nieves and her mother, Patricia Mahaffey, hospitalized.
"Doctor just said it would be another six months before I can walk," said Mahaffey.
The crash was in October of last year.
Nieves was eight months pregnant. Her mother, Hitchcock, was on her way to Nieves' baby shower. Authorities said Hitchcock was pulling into the driveway where Nieves and Mahaffey were standing.
"I was about to wave to her and I realized she's not going to stop," said Nieves.
The two victims were pinned between the cars.
"She was so drunk, she actually kept pressing the gas on me. She didn't know how to put the car in reverse," said Nieves.
Hitchcock's blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit, authorities said.
Nieves had to have an emergency C-section to give birth to her son, Nikolas.
"With a newborn, our first baby, I don't know, you want to hold your child. I couldn't," said Nieves.
The pair is recovering, but says their family will never be the same.
Nieves said Hitchcock has never apologized. The family said they want people to realize the impact alcohol abuse can have, not just on the abuser, but everyone around them.
Hitchcock faces 12 years in prison if convicted.
Her sentencing was pushed back to February.
