Woman returns stolen puppy to Halifax Humane Society

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A woman suspected of stealing a Chihuahua puppy from the Halifax Humane Society has confessed to the theft and returned the pup, Channel 9 learned Wednesday.

Daytona Beach police said the woman was seen on surveillance video stealing the dog from the Halifax Humane Society over the weekend.

Workers didn't realize that the dog, Sharky, was missing for four hours.

"We never want to see that, with an animal just being taken," said worker Tyler Stover. "We have no idea how he's being cared for or where he went."

The woman signed in at the front desk, but shelter officials said her signature wasn't legible. She went into the area containing small dogs, took the 1-year-old Chihuahua out of its unlocked cage and walked across a good portion of the shelter's 5-acre property before taking off, authorities said.

The woman is facing grand theft charges.

The shelter said a family was planning to adopt the dog on the day it was stolen. Officials still hope to place Sharky in a loving home.
