Woman said efforts to save two dogs has her under attack

A family said their efforts to save the lives of two dogs, scheduled to be euthanized have them under attack online.

The family set up a GoFundMe account to pay for the dogs' medical problems. But they told Channel 9's Stephanie Bertini that they're now being harassed by people who accuse them of exploiting the animals.

Ronda Chewning said the joy she gets from caring for the dogs is being challenged.

"I thought it was the right thing to do," said Chewning.

She was brought to tears as she described to Bertini what she's dealing with online.

"Our name is being spread all over the Internet," said Chewning.

Chewning said that she and her daughter are being accused of exploiting the animals in an effort to make money. She said the comments are on Facebook and on the GoFundMe page they created to cover the costs of taking on the dogs.

"I knew it would be costly and that it didn't play into the budget," she said.

Chewning already has two dogs, but when she learned of two more dogs approaching their kill dates at Orange County Animal Services, she said she felt compelled to save them. She planned to keep them until she could find them a permanent home.

Chewning said when she and her daughter arrived at Animal Services, they found the two dogs together , in a kennel. She said it was clear the two had formed a special bond and that they should stay together.

"They love each other. The black one licks the white one all the time," she said.

The story of the dogs has gone viral, with donations coming in from as far away as Australia. But Chewning said the online backlash is getting worse by the day, and said she's notified Altamonte police about threats she has received.
