Patient Who Killed Surgeon, Self Identified

ORLANDO, Fla.,None — Orlando police have identified the man on Friday who they said shot and killed a surgeon and then himself in a parking garage at Florida Hospital.

Detectives say 53-year-old Nelson Flecha had a patient-doctor relationship with 41-year-old surgeon Dmitriy Nikitin. Police said they are having trouble finding a motive for Flecha's actions.

Police said the problem is that the patient's medical records are confidential to police even after he's dead.

So, they will likely have to get a subpoena to open those up and see exactly what kind of relationship these two men had.

At some point, Nelson Flecha's life may actually have been saved by Dr. Dmitry Nikitin. Dr. Dmitriy Nikitin 0527 Dr. Dmitriy Nikitin

Neighbor's tell us Flecha had a liver and a kidney transplant and no one can understand how those operations could have somehow ended in a murder-suicide.

"it's just a real tragedy all the way around," said a neighbor.

Police say the 53-year-old hunted down Dr. Nikitin in the parking garage of the Florida Hospital Thursday evening.

Police said the two briefly spoke and then Flecha pulled out a gun. Sources close to the investigation said the doctor was shot multiple times at close range, before Flecha turned the weapon on himself.

Police said they still have questions as to why Flecha would have killed Dr. Nikitin.

About a year ago, neighbors say Flecha had spent three weeks at the hospital for the transplants and recently started to look better.

They say he was active and moving around, with no visible side effects, but they also say he was still a very angry man.

"She even told him for someone that had all that done, you're very grumpy and you should be looking at life in a different way," said a neighbor.

Flecha was also listed as a missing person out of the Bronx, but he's been living in Volusia County since 2010.

Investigators said they will have to try and get Flecha's medical records to see if somewhere in there is an explanation for the murder of a man who may have also once saved his killer's life.

"I mean it's the gift of life, that's how it's always described," said Police.

Police do have videotape from inside that garage, but police said they are not going to release it. Also, police said Flecha did not have any prior criminal history.
