ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The attendance record of an Orange County middle school principal accused of cheating on his time-sheet is under investigation.
Principal Wayne Green resigned from Carver Middle School after he allegedly used sick and absentee days while he traveled the country doing speaking engagements. He may have to pay the school district back.
Green travels across the country as an educational consultant, speaking to groups of educators, and now the principal of 11 years is accused of using sick time to do it.
"We are investigating a principal at one of our schools as to whether he submitted proper documents for leave," said Diego "Woody" Rodriguez, Orange County School Attorney.
District records show Green used sick time to travel and speak at educational conferences, sometimes getting paid thousands of dollars for it.
Green makes just more than $93,000 a year to lead Carver Middle School which is a C-rated school.
Green has turned in his resignation, effective at the end of the month, but could be on the hook for hundreds of dollars if the district finds he lied on his time sheet.
"If we find there have been inconsistencies with that they've requested in terms of leave, we have every right to make sure we get recompensated," said Rodriguez.
WFTV went to the school on Wednesday to talk with Green but he wasn't in. WFTV was told he used one of his vacation days.
"I've decided in my career that I won't let anything interfere with me meeting the needs of students," said Green.
The district is investigating the number of sick hours Green used, but they weren't able to confirm whether Green's resignation is in response to the investigation.
