U.S. Postal Service employee accused of stealing cash, gift cards from mail

HOLT, Mich. — A U.S. Postal Service worker in rural Michigan has been charged with theft of mail contents after authorities said she spent months stealing money and gift cards from mail she was supposed to deliver.

Shamick Jones worked as a rural carrier associate for the USPS in Holt, according to the Lansing State Journal. She was indicted Dec. 18 on a charge of theft of mail contents by a postal service employee, the newspaper reported.

Authorities allege Jones stole from mail sent between February and June, according to WILX. The news station reported she had previously pleaded guilty in 2007 to a charge of theft of government property.

If convicted of stealing mail contents, Jones could face a maximum penalty of five years in prison along with a $250,000 fine and restitution, according to the Journal.
