Cookie helps break case of bakery burglar

MILWAUKEE — If you’re going to break into a business, make sure it’s not one that will be able to share your face for all to see.

Police have charged Dominic Kolp, accusing him of burglary of a building and felony bail jumping, WITI reported.

Lakeside Bakery was burglarized on April 19, which was discovered when a worker went to the business to open for the day on April 20, noticing that the cash drawer was missing along with the $200 it held.

Police said the surveillance video recorded outside of the business showed “a male subject wearing a cap carrying a plastic milk crate checking the side door of the bakery, then moving around to the north side of the building.” Eventually, police said the man got into the building through a side door, WITI reported.

Once inside, interior surveillance video captured the man’s “face with a high degree of clarity.”

Police were able to track Kolp down thanks to a creative cookie creation.

Lakeside Bakery used the surveillance video to print the face of the man they said broke into the business. They then put the digitized image on cookies and sold them, sharing the cookies on Facebook.

Days later, an officer saw pictures of the man online and recognized him. Another business owner also recognized him and said that Kolp was the man on the cookie, WITI reported.

On May 9, police went to a hotel where Kolp was staying. He tried to jump from a second-floor balcony but police were able to arrest him.

He denied being in the bakery but said he ran because he knew he was wanted in connection to the burglary, WITI reported.
