An apparent Facebook glitch left many social media users scratching their heads overnight as comments on celebrities’ pages flooded their news feeds, CNET and Forbes are reporting.
“Scrolling down my own feed, all I can see is posts, sent from people I’ve never met, to the official pages of The Beatles, Gorillaz and System of a Down,” CNET reporter Daniel Van Boom wrote in an article published early Wednesday.
Update 3:30 p.m. EDT Aug. 24: In a statement to NPR, a spokesperson for Meta confirmed that the issue was fixed early Wednesday morning.
“Earlier today, a configuration change caused some people to have trouble with their Facebook Feed,” the spokesperson told NPR. “We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
Original report: Other users around the world shared similar complaints about Facebook on Twitter, eventually causing #FacebookHacked to become a trending topic, according to ITV. Forbes reported that there was “no evidence” of a hack.
DownDetector, a website that tracks complaints about popular websites, reported possible problems with Facebook beginning at 2 a.m. EDT Wednesday. The number of complaints peaked about an hour later, reaching nearly 2,900.

Meta, which owns Facebook, acknowledged the issue in a statement early Wednesday, according to Forbes.
“We’re aware that some people are having trouble with their Facebook Feed,” the statement read. “We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

Shortly after 5:30 a.m. EDT, Forbes reported that its staff “was unable to replicate” the news feed problem, while DownDetector showed just 53 complaints about the social media site.
