Marzena Niejadlik said her Yorkie had escaped from her former home 11 years ago and disappeared, WFXT reported.

Rex, the dog, was only a few months old at the time.

Niejadlik filed a police report and looked everywhere for her puppy. She also hung up posters and offered a reward, but she never found the dog.

This week, however, their years apart came to an end, thanks to Stoughton Animal Control Officer Michelle Carlos.

Carlos had responded to a call about a small dog wandering in the area, so she picked it up and scanned its microchip, which led the officer to Niejadlik.

“She was in disbelief. She was like, ‘Wait a minute. My Rex?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, he’s here,’” Carlos told WFXT. “I got chills after the call. I was like, wow, this is amazing.”

“It’s hard to believe. You eventually have less and less hope with every year,” Niejadlik told WFXT. “That’s amazing. That’s really something we were really hoping will happen one day and finally it did. We had to wait a lot, but that’s amazing.”

Niejadlik said Rex was skinny, hungry and in need of a bath but was otherwise healthy.

Niejadlik introduced Rex to her twins who weren’t even born when Rex disappeared.

“It was very exciting to have him back,” Niejadlik’s daughter Victoria told WFXT, “especially that it was a long time. I wasn’t even alive. Two years before I was alive.”

Rex had been a birthday gift to Niejadlik’s mother after Niejadlik’s brother died. Rex returned to his family two months after Niejadlik’s other brother passed away, WFXT reported.
