Home burns down after Minnesota family rushes newborn to hospital

A Minnesota family that rushed their newborn to the hospital was spared from a fire that burned down their home.

While the Estes family was in the emergency room, their home in South St. Paul caught fire and burned down, WCCO reported. Police said that the family could have been seriously injured or killed if they were at home when the blaze ignited, the television station reported.

It should have been a happy time. Zach Estes and his wife, Meghan Estes, welcomed a baby girl on Friday. Everly Estes was allowed to go home with her family on Saturday, but the newborn began having problems breathing, according to WCCO.

“She was waking up, and I went to grab her and she started choking and quit breathing, so we had called 911 instantly," Zach Estes told the television station. “We got rushed to the hospital.”

With their other two children in tow, Zach and Meghan Estes took Everly to the emergency room and stayed with the infant all night.

The next morning, they received a call from their neighbor.

“Saying our house was up in flames, and we had our animals inside, and thank God we weren’t in there,” Zach Estes told WCCO. “All of our memories in there are gone, but we could’ve become a memory."

“It’s unbelievable. I don’t know, it’s just unbelievable how much damage there is,” Meghan Estes told the television station. “Police (said) nobody in there would have made it out of their alive.”

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help the family. The goal was set at $10,000, and by late Thursday more than $22,400 had been raised.

“With all the bad stuff going on in the world, it’s so nice to see everybody coming together to help us through the toughest time of our lives,” Zach Estes told WCCO.
