A lot of puppies: Dalmatian gives birth to 16 puppies

FREDRICKSBURG, Texas — Cue the “101 Dalmatians” jokes and movie quotes.

A Texas family just welcomed 16 puppies.

Brittni Turner helped deliver the puppies at Fredericksburg Veterinary Center in Fredricksburg, Texas on June 24, KSAT reported.

She told the station that she’s done a lot of emergency caesarian sections but never delivered a litter this large during her career.

Luna had gone into labor at home but it stopped progressing so they rushed the dog to the vet.

Five puppies had been born naturally but puppy number six was in a bad position and couldn’t come out without help.

Turner told KSAT that she was so worried about getting ready for the procedure that she didn’t count the puppies that had not been born yet.

“When we got into surgery, I was just pulling out puppy after puppy and we ended up needing to call in all of our receptionists and staff for an all hands on deck to help clean and revive puppies,” Turner told KSAT.

Employees needed to simulate the puppies and clean out their mouths and noses.

Even after carrying 16 puppies for months, and having to undergo surgery, she’s been attentive to her litter.

Turner said all of the puppies have homes already once they’re ready to be separated from their mama.

Luna is not the record holder when it comes to giving birth to a huge litter of Dalmatians. That honor goes to Melody who had 19 puppies in 2019, the BBC reported.

Normally a Dalmatian will have between six and nine puppies in a litter, according to Training Buster. But the dog-focused website said it’s been common for 15 puppies to be born that it’s almost becoming the average.

And while Luna’s puppies look different than their mom, their spots will start appearing soon enough, usually around three weeks light spots will start appearing with more and more spots that are darker in color appearing between three and four months old, Training Buster said.
