MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. — A New Jersey corrections officer upset about his father’s doctor’s appointment fatally shot the office worker who tried to talk to him about the issue Friday afternoon, officials said.

Bruce Gomola, 51, became upset about a urologist appointment for his father. When Stephanie Horton, a patient services representative, tried to talk to him about the issue, he pulled out a handgun and fatally shot her once in the chest, the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said.

The bullet passed through Horton, 41, and struck another patient in the knee. Gomola then left the building and drove off. He returned shortly later and surrendered to authorities.

Gomola was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon. Gomola, a corrections officer at the Burlington County Jail, is being held at a Camden jail.
