In a news release, Barrow County Emergency Services said that just after midnight Saturday, fire crews were called out to a house fire on Hidden Acres Road. Fire crews were learning that there was some kind of explosion at the house and that there were multiple people trapped inside.

Chief Alan Shuman said in the news release that as fire crews arrived, “multiple explosions were going off inside the house.”

“The home was fully involved in fire and was collapsing as a result of the fire. Several vehicles were also involved,” Shuman said.

Additional fire crews were called out to assist with putting out the fire. According to WSB-TV, the fire and the explosions were so intense that fire crews had to fight the blaze from a “defensive position.”

Fire crews started to make their way inside the house once the fire was under control, according to Barrow County Emergency Services. Three people were found dead inside following the explosions and fire. Two of them were taken to the hospital by ambulance and the other person was taken by helicopter.

Officials with the fire department said that the explosion was caused by multiple propane tanks that were found inside the house, according to WSB.

“This is a very tragic event that resulted in loss of life and injuries to others,” Shuman said in a statement. “The firefighters and medical personnel on the scene did a great job under the circumstances. We also want to remind citizens that it is extremely dangerous to have propane cylinders stored in your home, or any other structure.”
