SEATTLE — The National Hockey League’s newest franchise will be known as the Seattle Kraken, officials announced Thursday, according to KIRO-TV.
Officials announced the name and unveiled the team’s logo and colors at the under-construction Climate Pledge Arena, where the team will play starting with the 2021-22 season, KIRO-TV reported.
A legend from the deep awakens.

The decision comes two years after officials announced Seattle would house the NHL’s 32nd franchise team. Officials with NHL Seattle said they spent 18 months researching possible names. In all, they said they considered about 1,200 names, including the Seattle Emeralds, the Seattle Rainiers and the Seattle Whales, according to KIRO-TV.
“Working with fans, brand agencies, local artists, naming experts, historians, and the league office, the Kraken emerged as the clear choice,” team officials said in a news release.
It’s not the first time Seattle’s had a hockey team. From 1915 to 1924, the Seattle Metropolitans played as part of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. In 1917, the team became the first from America to win the Stanley Cup, according to KIRO-TV.
