Volusia Co. May Implement School Dress Code

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County Schools have never had a district-wide dress code, but now they want one. Students could get some say in the matter.

Students, parents, and administrators are encouraged to fill out a survey (click here for survey); the survey has seven questions that could affect what students wear to school next year.

When it comes to school dress codes in Volusia County, students say they know some of the rules.

"Guys can't where pants sagging past their butts," a student said. "They try to prevent you from wearing spaghetti straps for girls, little short-shorts."

But when it comes down to it, there are no district-wide rules. Each school has its own dress code and students say, sometimes, those codes are open to interpretation. That's why the district is looking to change things up, possibly institute a district-wide policy.

The survey is posted on the school district website asking students, parents, school officials, really anyone in the community for input.

"I believe there should be changes in dress code, because the way some of these kids come to school is outrageous," a parent told WFTV.

That's the kind of questions that will be asked. Should a district dress code be established and how strict should it be?

Some students told WFTV they don't think it should change, and they definitely don't want it to require school uniforms. But they say they think the survey is a good idea as long as the district listens to what they have to say.

"I think it would show how students actually feel, and what they think," a student said.

The survey will be up through next Friday. A committee will look at the ideas and then could make a recommendation to the school board.
