ORLANDO, Fla. — Officials at SeaWorld Orlando told WFTV a 25-year-old killer whale died at the theme park.
Park officials say the whale named Kalina suddenly became ill Monday afternoon and died later that night. A park spokesman says the whale was eating well and seemed healthy just a day before.
A necropsy will be performed, but it could be six weeks before the cause of her death is known.
Kalina was the first surviving killer whale born in captivity at SeaWorld. She was born at the park in 1985 and later became a mother to several calves herself.
Kalina is the third whale belonging to SeaWorld to die this year. Last month, a killer whale named Sumar died at SeaWorld's San Diego location. Back in June, a 20-year-old killer whale named Taima died while giving birth in Orlando.
