BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A Viera woman is working to get a banned books back on Brevard County library shelves.
WFTV reported previously that the county banned the best-selling "Fifty Shades" trilogy from library shelves because of what some have called its "mommy-porn" content.
Linda Tyndall is an avid reader. When she learned Brevard County public libraries pulled the Fifty Shades trilogy from library shelves, reportedly for it erotic content, Tyndall authored an online petition. At last check the petition had 208 signatures.
"We're adults. We can make these decisions ourselves. It's not for anybody else to make these decisions," said Tyndall.
A few copies of "Fifty Shades of Grey" are still in circulation, and the library has notified the 200-plus people on the waiting list for now, they're not going back on the shelf.
"We're going to review our process for selecting books and in doing so we're hoping to ward off this kind of backlash or feedback, depending on who you talk to when it comes to future selections," said Brevard Communications Director Don Walker.
The library's decision to first buy, then remove, the books from shelves has put the library system in the middle of a literary firestorm. It was even a Hot Topic on a recent episode of ABC's show "The View."
When WFTV's Melonie Holt asked if all the attention could get the book back on library shelves, she didn't get a definitive answer.
"Conceivably. That might be a step that's taken in the future. But just as likely we may determine there are other books that don't belong on the shelf. But it's all premature at this point," said Walker.
The last book removed from Brevard County library shelves was Madonna's 1992 book called "Sex."
