1 killed, 2nd person critical after wrong-way crash in DeLand

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — One person was killed and another was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a wrong-way crash in DeLand Sunday evening.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers were called to the intersection of Spring Garden Ave. and Glenwood Rd. just after 9 p.m. for a crash involving three vehicles.

According to FHP investigators, a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria was headed northbound on Spring Garden Ave. in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with a 2019 Nissan Rogue that was traveling southbound, causing the Rogue to flip onto its left side.

The wrong-way driver, identified only as a 60-year-old man from Barberville, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to a crash report from FHP.

The driver of the Rogue, a 42-year-old woman from DeLand, was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center with “critical” injuries, according to FHP. The crash report says she was wearing a seatbelt.

The third vehicle- a 2015 Nissan Altima that was also southbound on Spring Garden Ave. at the time of the crash- was only damaged by debris from the initial collision. That driver wasn’t injured and stayed at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
