ORLANDO, Fla. — The Bishop Moore Hornets won their first state championship in football since 1970. All it took was 18 fourth quarter points and a last second missed field goal by Wakulla star Feliepe Franks.
Bishop Moore trailed 27-19 entering the fourth quarter but Colin Hartman connected with Rayshad Lewis for their second touchdown of the day. Then Lewis ran in the two point conversion to tie the game at 27. Lewis is the son of former NFL star linebacker Ray Lewis who was at the game.
On their next drive, Jake McIntyre hit a 48-yard field goal to give the Hornets a three point lead.
Just a few minutes later though, Brandon Berry scored his second rushing touchdown of the game to put the War Eagles back in front 34-30. Berry had 10 carries for 76 yards.
Bishop Moore answered again though. Trey Page, who missed most of the season with a broken collarbone, found some room on the left edge and ran in an 18 yard touchdown with less than two minutes to play.
That put the Hornets in front for good.
Wakulla had one more chance to tie it but Franks' field goal try from 50 yards away was never online, drifting harmlessly to the left.
Franks is also Wakulla's quarterback. He threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns. The 4-star QB recently committed to play for the Florida Gators.
Gators head coach Jim McElwain was at the Citrus Bowl for today's game.
