Marion County: Shelter, school closing information during Hurricane Irma

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Marion County Public Schools and the Marion County Division of Emergency Management updated the school closings and shelter information Friday in preparation of Hurricane Irma.

Officials said Marion County Public Schools are closed Friday through Tuesday.

Emergency Management officials said additional shelters will be opening at 5 p.m. Friday.

List of shelters for Marion County

General population shelters:

North Marion Middle School, located at 2085 West Highway 329 in Citra

Fort McCoy School, located at 16160 North East Highway 315 in Fort McCoy

Lake Weir High School, located at 10351 South East Maricamp Road in Ocala

Forest High School, located at 5000 South East Maricamp Road in Ocala

Hammett Bowen Jr. Elementary, located at 4397 South West 95th Street in Ocala

Special needs shelters:

Belleview Middle School, located at 10500 South East 36th Avenue in Belleview

West Port High School, located at 3733 South West 80th Avenue in Ocala.

Special needs individuals can contact the Citizens Information Line at 352-369-7500 to arrange transportation to a shelter.

Pet-friendly shelter:

Vanguard High School, located at 7 North West 28th Street in Ocala. Pet(s) must be caged, and owners are required to provide recent immunization documentation.

Please bring whatever supplies are needed in order for pets to be self-sufficient, and please pick up after them.

Registered sex offenders and predators are required to report to the Marion County Jail for sheltering. There will be law enforcement presence at all shelters for extra security.

Emergency Management officials encourage citizens to bring supplies to the shelters to last them for up to 48 hours, such as clothing, bedding, medications, food, water, etc.
